Lake Shawnee is a community within Jefferson Township. Today, Lake Shawnee homes use Wharton, NJ 07885 as their mailing city and ZIP code, even though Wharton is a separate municipality. The proposal would change the postal designation to Lake Hopatcong, NJ 07849—a mailing identity already used by nearby parts of Jefferson Township. Lake Shawnee would remain in the same location, municipality, and school district.

Will this change our municipality or schools?+
No. This proposal concerns the USPS mailing ZIP code and preferred mailing city. Lake Shawnee residents would remain residents of Jefferson Township, and school enrollment would not change because of the postal adjustment.
Would property taxes change?+
A mailing-address adjustment does not move a property or change its municipality. Taxing authority and assessments are based on the property’s actual location, not the preferred postal city name.
What would residents need to update?+
If USPS approves a future change, residents would receive official instructions and a transition period. Banks, insurers, licenses, subscriptions, and other address records could then be updated over time.
Why use 07849 instead of creating a new ZIP code?+
The original request sought a boundary adjustment to the neighboring Lake Hopatcong ZIP code. Creating a new ZIP code for a small community would be a much larger and less practical operational request.
Where is the Lake Hopatcong Post Office? Would residents have to use it?+
The Lake Hopatcong Post Office is at 700 State Route 15 South, much closer to Lake Shawnee than the Wharton Post Office at 350 North Main Street. However, residents may use any convenient post office for ordinary retail services. The requested ZIP code change concerns Lake Shawnee’s mailing identity and delivery area; it would not restrict where residents may buy stamps or mail packages. USPS would determine any operational details involving delivery, held mail, or package pickup.
What happened in 2016?+
USPS received 299 responses: 132 yes, 166 no, and one with no preference. The result was closer than it may appear—a shift of just 18 voters from no to yes would have produced a 150–148 majority in favor. The proposal did not advance, and an appeal followed.
